Developing Customer Products and Services with New Electro Technologies (white paper)

The utility industry is witnessing an unprecedented electro-technology revolution – both on the supply (generation) side and the demand (customer end-products) side. This rise of electro-technology products and services holds the possibility of simultaneously providing significant benefits to utility customers and utility shareholders. Unfortunately, utilities have a mixed history, at best, with respect to the development and launch of new products and services. Will this time be any different? It could be, or perhaps for the survival of some, it has to be different, but it will require a disciplined approach to determining what products and services to offer and how to offer them in a way that satisfies customers and makes money for the utility.

Electric Vehicles Are Here. Is Your EV Strategy Ready?

There are nearly 500,000 plug-in electric vehicles (EV) on U.S. roads today. Almost every car manufacturer offers an electric vehicle with over 14 models to choose from and more on the way. The cost of EVs is declining, while the range on a full charge is rapidly increasing. Tesla and Chevy plan on introducing new models with a range of over 200 miles at a cost of around $35,000 or less by 2018. Bloomberg New Energy Finance estimates that by 2022, the total cost of EVs will reach parity with their internal combustion counterparts. That’s likely to be the point of “lift off” for EV sales.

DEERFIELD, IL, June 8, 2015: MCR Performance Solutions, LLC, a leading management consulting firm serving electric, natural gas and water utilities, announced today the expansion of its service offerings with the formation of their Utility Transformation Services practice. This new practice addresses the business, technology and regulatory challenges faced by investor owned, public power and G&T clients that are driving transformational changes in the way they plan, operate and manage their customer relationships. Will McNamara, an experienced industry leader with deep expertise in utility smart grid deployment, distributed generation and renewable energy, regulatory policy and customer engagement strategies, has joined MCR to develop the practice.

MCR’s Utility Transformation Services practice will provide consulting services to clients in five key areas: 1) Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Transformations, 2) Smart Grid Technology Transformations, 3) Regulatory Transformations, 4) Financial Transformations, and 5) Strategy Transformations. “Our new practice helps our clients understand deep transformations taking place and develop unique strategies that create value through an integrated system infrastructure, a customer-centric focus that drives development of new products and services, and proactive regulatory strategies that create innovative cost recovery models and new sources of revenue generation,” said Frank Craig, co-founder and partner of MCR.

MCR has hired Will McNamara as Director to develop and lead the practice. Mr. McNamara has over 18 years of experience working in the energy industry in both utility and consulting roles. Over the last decade, he has focused his client-consulting services on the deployment of emerging smart grid technologies, integration of distributed generation and renewables into utility distribution systems, and systematic changes to regulatory models that enable utility investments in advanced technologies. Mr. McNamara is a well-known energy industry thought leader, has published numerous articles and white papers, and is a frequent speaker on utility transformation issues.

“We are very happy to have Will on board to drive the Utility Transformation Services practice for MCR,” said Craig. “Will is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the impacts that policy, technology and market changes are having on the utility landscape.
